Sins Against Purity

What is the real cause of the abortion epidemic?

The Church has always taught that sexual intimacy is properly enjoyed within the confines of sacramental marriage. But not every marriage. Why?

There are instances in which a woman's health may be in danger in the event of a pregnancy. A husband willing to risk the loss or health of his wife sins when he places his desire for sex ahead of his responsibility to protect his family.

So can that man look outside his marriage for sexual attention? No. He would be  making an adulterer of his new partner, violating the trust of his wife and risk introducing scandal upon his family name. That man is expected by the church, to be a man and accept his circumstances without complaint.

The argument goes that sex is therapeutic, that a marriage is not complete unless a man and woman are able to offer each other the "comfort" available only in the marital bed. There is no question that comfort is to be had or that this comfort can be therapeutic, but this is not the primary purpose of the reproductive system. These are byproducts only.

The other argument says that sex is essential. There is no evidence that suggests that a man or a woman cannot live well without sex.

When either of the previous arguments are accepted as fact, a number of problems ensue.

1) Pleasure becomes the product, not a byproduct. A person chooses what feels good versus what is good. Women become objects of pleasure and men become manipulable adolescents.

2) A family is not held together by bonds of virtue and maturity, but by entertainment.

3) A "please me or I'm leaving" mentality becomes the basis for all discussion.

The next error to be born of this particular disobedience, is that sacramental marriage is confining and permanent. Therefore to be postponed or avoided altogether. In part to avoid the sin and disgrace of divorce. Choosing one sin in lieu of another and calling it virtue blurs the line between right and wrong.

It also reinforces the pursuit of pleasure over the pursuit of virtue and successfully moves the discussion from "the good versus the best" to the lesser of two evils. Remember also, that we are talking here of simple virtue, a far cry from the heroic virtue extolled by the church and her saints.

At this point we have completely reversed the natural order. We have moved from pleasure as a byproduct of reproductive intimacy to reproduction being a byproduct of pleasure.

If only that unintended byproduct could be eliminated. But there are several byproducts. Namely, that women are alternately sexual playthings and manipulative pleasure brokers and men are alternately unwitting lapdogs trading manhood for pleasure or womanizing animals using and abusing women at their whim.

Children, "unexpected ones", anyway, inside or outside of marriage become nothing more than bargaining chips.

Since, according to this reversed reasoning, pleasure is the product, and it is acceptable to chase it outside of marriage, why not chase it wherever it is to be found? As casual "friends with benefits", in same sex encounters, on the internet, at brothels.

This is why our culture is in the shape it's in. Aquinas said that a mistake made early is a mistake indeed. The same sex "marriage" debate is the fruit of a seed planted and nurtured long ago in the "straight" (sort of) community.

What activates my activism

I attended Mass and prayers at Notre Dame yesterday. The event was hosted by NDresponse. http://www.ndresponse.com/ They are a student group formed amidst the controversy surrounding the honorary degree awarded to President Obama. The group was given permission to host a peaceful, prayerful alternative for students who chose not to participate in the questionable commencement exercise.

Pro-Life Catholics came from all over to celebrate the Eucharist together, to pray a rosary together and to support young Catholic graduates who chose principle over pomp. There were no arrests on the South Quad or the Grotto. There was no profanity. There was an impressive display of Catholic unity.

Conventional news outlets claimed "hundreds" attended, I say 1000+ attended. They also say "dozens" of Catholic Bishops opposed the University's decision, I say 74 signed statements of disapproval.

When the Mass and vigil ended, the quad was as neat as a pin. No garbage, paper or drink containers anywhere. I am proud of my fellow Catholics and the students that make up NDresponse.

That brings me the the point of my post. I didn't go to someone else's commencement to protest anything. Although I am staunchly pro-life, that's not why I went. I attended to support Catholics who love their faith as I do.

I believe every single jot and tittle of Church teaching. I attempt to follow every precept, to allow the Roman Catholic Church to live in me as I live in it. I fail daily in matters great and small. I am, however, a better man for the attempt.

I will be 49 years old in a week or so and I have never been tested like these Catholic graduates, or like Carrie Prejean. I can say without doubt, that at their age I would have failed. I would have saved my own skin. My desire to fit in coupled with willful ignorance would have made this a non-issue.

I would like to think that today I would step up. But what if my stated beliefs could cost me a mortgage re-fi or my job?

This is why strong support for conservative Catholic views is an essential task for the laity. No Catholic in the USA should EVER have to stand alone. We the laity, the Royal Priesthood of the Holy Roman Church, must heed the call to combat the incessant assault of secularism. The time has come to stop blaming poor catechism, misinterpretation of Vatican II, an "out of touch" clergy etc. adnauseum.

The natural law is indelibly stamped in the hearts of all men. Obedience is available to all Catholics. The sacraments of reconciliation and Communion are central to our faith and efficacious regardless of the views of the priest administering them.

My core beliefs put me in opposition to all atheists and agnostics, nearly all protestants and at least half of those in America who call themselves Catholic. Including many priests and religious. Sure, I can find plenty of common ground with all of these other groups but at the core, I can't budge. The simple principle that Catholicism is a banquet, not a buffet orders my priorities. I am not a judge of "The Law", I am subject to it.

Many conservatives state my views on many issues perfectly and I am grateful for their courage and voices but as soon as they reveal a Catholic principle that they disagree with, I can only trust them so far. At some point, they will find themselves at a "jumping off place" and I can't be sure which way they'll jump. I understand that knowing the right way is no guarantee of going the right way, but an aversion to what is "uncomfortable" is likely to unduly influence the decision.

Religion Mache

Today we are going to learn Religion Mache. This is a college course worth 1 credit hour, unless it is accompanied by classes designed to foment hatred of the United States. Then it is worth 5 credit hours. First, you need a piece of wire. Preferably something recycled. Even better if it conjures images of misogynistic, patrician, old fashioned squares. Here is a good example: religion mache
Next, bend the wire into a shape. Preferably something rigid and unyielding. Like this:

religion mache
Now that we have a substantial, but hollow frame to work with, we will need paper. Again recycled is better. What we'll be doing is tearing out pages of a book. Any old thing will do. Soaking them in an adhesive mixture of flour and water and covering the inflexible frame with them. The frame must be completely concealed. AHH. Here is a good source of camoflage:
religion mache
Now you're ready to paint to suit your taste. Neutral is best, unless you can color it quickly to meet changing political climates.

Exit Strategy Needed Now

Barak Obama's handlers are keeping his travel itinerary quiet citing security concerns. That is not acceptable to taxpayers footing the bill with hard earned treasure. To honestly believe that foreknowledge of a US Senator's travel plans would influence the decision- making of professional terrorists shows a lack of nuance. Furthermore, the Secret Service detail assigned to Senator Obama was not consulted prior to the trip, placing their families and loved ones in the unhappy position of not knowing when they will see their sons and daughters again. These agents will not speak up on their own behalf because they are too stupid to find real work in this Bush/Cheney generated economy.

The American people deserve to see a timetable for withdrawal immediately. An official who asked to remain nameless stated that Obama lied to get us into this quagmire. "This is my family's California driving vacation of 1972 all over again." whined a staffer who skipped lunch to attend the protest. "We were like "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" and my dad was like "It's just around this next bend." "He did that for like, six states, what an a**hole. I'm calling my therapist."

Chants of "Obama lied, it's a long ride!!!" drowned out the sound of a passing ice cream truck as agitated protesters exercised their constitutional right to free speech.

Four capital police officers were ordered to attend sensitivity training for laughing at the protesters.

Iraq-tile disfunction

Now that public pressure has forced Barak Obama to grudgingly visit our troops on the ground in Iraq, I'm prepared for a climax. The drive-by media plans to send an entourage befitting a rock star of his magnitude. Cameras, lights, sound men- the works. I wonder if the creative types at "Team Obama" can stage another recreation of the flag raising on Iwo Jima like the Enviro-wackos did. Maybe they could have a diverse sampling of soldiers raising a white flag. It might also be time for a series on skin cancer caused by the purple voting ink used in the Iraqi elections.

Obama might think that with Streisand or Springsteen providing the soundtrack, slapping America around on foreign soil will sound legitimate. A trip to the Starbucks in the green zone might provide just the right ambience for such insightful commentary.

It occurs to me that it might be a time to build bridges to the disenfranchised mullahs in the mountains. I recommend copies of US tax code so the insurgents can properly register as 501(c)3 corporations.  It,s obvious that American man made global warming is taking it's toll in Iraq. The once verdant countryside left barren, preventing ecology conscious terrorists from making eco-friendly ethanol.

This Che Guevarra wanne be makes me sick. The media that props him up makes me sick and the academic culture that provides the manure to fertilize marxist thought makes me sick.

This is "The Surreal Life" in Bagdad.

"That Man's Nuts- Grab 'em"

If the Reverend Jackson is serious about cutting out Barry O's nuts, he's going to have to find them first.

It's not that I doubt that he has a pair, or that I think they're particularly small. It's that he is part of the new "castrati". Simple removal of the family jewels results in a general lack of ambition. What good does that do for the "party", comrade. What happens is that the macadamias are taken hostage. Maybe left as a deposit is a better way of putting it.

Most guys have left them as a deposit at least once. For example, going antiquing in the hope that an eventful evening will follow. Barry, however has markers out all over the place. Who's got them now?

Places to look:
Michele's nightstand
Code Pink HQ
Chicago City Hall
Trinity United Church
Wood Foundation
Tony Resko's house
NARAL HQ
Planned Parenthood

Maybe using technology gleaned through embryonic stem cell research, Barry can grow a new pair for himself. I doubt it though. He'll grow lots of pairs to place as collateral, he's been without them for so long he doesn't even miss them.

Good Luck Jesse.

Billy The Bomber

Billy The Bomber
Billy the Bomber was born very, very wealthy. He went to good schools and ate good food.
Then he went to more good schools and ate more good food.

Billy's government was in a war with bad people. Billy's government was making Billy's friends dress up in soldier outfits and blow up bad people. Billy didn't like that at all. Billy and his friends liked to pick out their own outfits. They also wanted to pick who they could blow up.

Billy's Friend Bernie
This is one of Billy's friends. Her name is Bernie. She liked to pick out her own outfits too. Billy and Bernie had lots of friends once. Billy and Bernie's friends decided to blow themselves up.

Billy was pretty smart. He figured out that the world is not fair. Billy figured out that some things were "obstacles to his full humanity", whatever that means. Billy and Bernie figured out that the women's bathroom at the Pentagon was screwing up their lives.

Billy's Obstacle

"

Billy was pretty smart, all right. He figured out how to get that bathroom out of his life forever.

Billy's Solution

Billy and Bernie blew up the women's bathroom at the Pentagon together. Billy and Bernie did a lot together.

Now Billy and Bernie are old. Billy is really smart. He was so smart when he was little, that he never had to learn anything ever again. Now he teaches other little kids how to pick out their own outfits. Billy also teaches them how to "remove obstacles to their full humanity" whatever that means. Bernie found a job, too. She's a lawyer. When Billy's students do bad things to their obstacles his friend Bernie can help them stay out of jail.

The End

Life Is Good (Things I Cling To)

Home in Indiana. I am the 3rd owner of a 1929 "Chicago Bungalow". I live in heaven.

My bike is an '87 Electra Glide that has 90,000 miles on it. I am the 2nd owner. Burning gasoline is my favorite hobby. Getting there is more fun than being there, no matter where "there" is.

Target
9 for 9 first time out with a rifle. It was a lever action .357 carbine.
 Our Lady of Sorrows
I am unabashedly Catholic of the "old school" variety.

Freedom Run 2008
Freedom Run Marseilles, Illinois

I am a "typical white person" clinging to God, Guns and Gasoline. I speak a little Spanish, Polish and Korean (not bad for a
xenophobe, huh?) I teach Catechism to teen agers. (basically, I undo what the lib teachers do to our kids). I have attended the Confirmation of converts, the naturalization of foreigners, the baptism of babies and the funerals of friends. I prefer Dunkin Donuts coffee, Shell gasoline and plastic bags at the grocery store. I like charcoal in my barbecue.

I was saved from alcoholic insanity by a power greater than myself. I thank Him daily and live for opportunities to try to repay the debt.

On Dignity

On Dignity

God has made man from nothing. We are creatures made for a specific purpose. We can perform many tasks, which tend toward that ultimate purpose.

We have hands which can grasp, point, caress, strike, etc. Legs which can walk, run, climb, etc. These are attributes.

Dignity seems to be more of an ingredient than an attribute.

Dignity seems to have been granted in equal measure to all men. Although not everyone can perceive dignity, it is always there. This means that the perception of dignity is the sole responsibility of the observer.

To say that someone conducts himself with dignity implies that the person acting, perceives the dignity that God has placed within him, and acts accordingly. Conversely, when we say that a person acts in an undignified manner, we imply that the person does not perceive his inherent dignity. This means that we perceive the outward expression of a person’s inward relationship with their Creator.

With all that said, only one man is known to have seen and appreciated the dignity of all men perfectly. Many saints have demonstrated intimate familiarity with human dignity and should serve as models for those of us “who do not see”.

This means that we “have a beam in our own eye” and are incompetent to judge the worthiness of a person’s right actions until this beam is removed.

How do we remove this beam?

Humility is the proper tool for the job. Humility is to stand on God given dignity alone. Offering no defense for the handiwork of the Creator, no embarrassment for what we cannot do, no pride for what we can. Only from this point of simplicity is our own human dignity visible to ourselves.

With a real appreciation for what God has made we have no compulsion to be seen as more or nagging sense of being seen as less. Now that we are no longer competing for position, we can clearly see the dignity of our brothers.

We can see others as God sees them.

On Sin

The word "sin" is an ancient archery term that means simply to "miss the mark"

A novice archer, however much he may desire to hit the target, is unlikely to score a bull's eye the first time out. All sorts of praise can be heaped on him for the attempt. He may have even demonstrated an ability that is rare in beginners. He may even show enough promise to warrant a celebration of sorts for his efforts. These facts do not alter the result. He missed the mark. He sinned.

Modern connotation, personal prejudice and much misunderstanding have changed what many of us think the word "sin" means. It means what it means. To miss the mark.

In our earthly existence, the "mark" is to dwell in heaven with our Creator. This is possible only when we align our will with God's. This is a problem for us.

We are novices. It is unlikely that we will score a bull's eye the first time out. We should celebrate our honest attempts. We can and should learn from them all.

To sin while making an honest attempt to live according to God's will is a venial sin. So it is safe to say that venial sins are, as a rule, educational. Repeated venial sin as a result of a stubborn refusal to take direction or a willful defiance of authority can and often does become mortal sin.

Mortal sin, although much can be learned from it, is not, at it's core, educational. It's punitive. It blocks the sunlight of the Spirit, causes a sense of shame and breeds defiance. It very often hurts others. Since our pride makes it hard to own up to small mistakes, it's naturally even harder to own up to big ones. Isolation is a likely result.

Volumes have been written on this topic and this is only a rudimentary and therefore grossly incomplete treatment of it. Nevertheless, this is a healthy starting point.

The Wooden Beam In Your Own Eye

The Wooden Beam In Your Own Eye

“Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but you do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye?” Mt.7.3

We see the world through our own eyes and perceive it in our own minds. What we think about something we see can be very different than what the next person thinks about the same thing. A farmer may see a stone in his field as an impediment to his prosperity, while an artist may see fortune in the very same stone. This is the healthy outcome of recognizing our own strengths and weaknesses and coupling them with vision.

The same is true for our behavior. We tend to se something we like to do as “good”, even if evidence surfaces to suggest otherwise. Very often we and our friends and family have similar likes and dislikes, so our attachment to activities and behaviors is reinforced. This is a good thing when what we like is, in fact, good. This is a bad thing, obviously, when the thing we like is bad. This is the true origin of peer pressure.

Sometimes a loved one will tell us they are worried about our behavior, health or spending habits. Our response to genuine concern should be gracious and appreciative. A mature person will examine the merits of these observations and make adjustments where necessary. If our actions are righteous, there is no reason to be defensive.

So what would make an otherwise intelligent person resentful of the loving concern of a friend?

Denial.

When we see something we like, we want it to be a good thing. The more we like it, the more we will that it  be good. Conversely, when we don’t like something, we look for reasons for it to be bad. These reasons justifying the goodness and badness of things do not need to be rooted in reality for us to come to believe them.

These justifications are called denial by therapists, attachment to sin by the church and they were called “the wooden beam in your own eye” by Jesus.

The admonition of our Savior to “remove the wooden beam in your own eye first: then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye”, serves to teach us to use discretion when confronting a friend with a problem, but more than that, He tells us that we will be better able to help after we have removed denial from ourselves.

Another observation about these “splinters”

A penny seen from twenty or so feet away looks very small, but up close it can completely cover your eye. This analogy is to indicate that a behavior or habit is only the tip of the iceberg. It may be almost imperceptible to others, but the attachment to it can taint our perception of everything in our lives. It will prejudice our thinking, decision making, child rearing and money spending. It will choose our mate, our friends and our jobs. It will stand as an obstacle to communion with God.

There is no greater obstacle to spiritual growth.

Dogs and condoms

One of my favorite scenes in any movie occurs in one of the National Lampoon movies. Clark Griswald is being sexually assaulted by his brother-in-law Eddie"s dog. Eddie assures Clark that the best thing to do is to "just let him finish."

According to the loony left, an appropriate "fix" would have been to place a condom on the dog. Thereby removing the threat of a stain on Clarks trousers or a blue dress as the case may be. They completely ignore the fact that the behavior itself is disordered. They would have us believe that a perpetually humping dog is the natural state of pet ownership. (I mean pet stewardship, sorry PETA).

We are building a culture of dry humping sex addicts one condom at a time. The spread of AIDS is a direct result of the refusal to see sexual contact for what it is, and more importantly, for what it is not.

Do we say about our kids "The best thing to do is to just let them finish?" Or do we instruct them in proper, decent behavior that results in an orderly society that allows women to be fully human and not just "pant legs" for boys to hump, and men to be fully men and not just snivelling children angling daily for a place to assert counterfeit manhood.

Holy War? I'm In

Code Pink  so far has been a very entertaining diversion on the cable networks. Much like the dancing hot dogs in the movie trailers at the drive-in, they neither add or subtract anything of value from the feature attraction. They do, however, remind you that you're at the theater.

That's an interesting point this week. The thespians protested this week in front of a Marine recruiting office you can guess where. This is by no means unusual in itself but they tried a new tactic. It failed. You see, they brought their spiritual advisors along this time. Assorted "Wiccans"? gathered to cast "spiritual attacks" on the recruiters and presumably their "handlers", the Bush Administration.

These pagans (due reverence granted the diversity of faith) believe that these attacks will work. Or do they?

If they do believe it, they are guilty of assault, subversion, giving aid and comfort to the enemy, and stupidity.

If they don't believe it, they admit to being the charlatans they are.

While Elijah's solution may be extreme in modern day America, we can take comfort in the fact that one man armed with true faith, defeated (in stunning theatrical fashion) a few hundred false prophets, thus preventing false teaching to corrupt the masses.

We can also relish the moment after his stunning victory when, while catching his breath, he told God he needed a break.

SHUT UP AND SING

Dad was a union steward for years, so I learned a little about both of his jobs as I was growing up. One memorable discussion we had occurred after a call from an employee that thought he had a grievance.

After several minutes of polite question and answer type conversation (I only heard one end),Dad firmly asked a question. "What do you think you're being paid for?"

After a "listening pause" dad's jaw set. I could tell he had something to say, I'd seen that look before, not often, but I'd seen it. Then he said "If you think the company is paying you the large salary they're paying you to drive a little brown truck, you're crazy!" "They're paying good people enough to keep them from working somewhere else!"

And now a news flash for Sean Penn, Assorted Baldwin Brothers, Babs Streisand and a seemingly endless litany of idiot savants. WE, YOUR PUBLIC, PAY YOU HUGE SUMS OF MONEY TO KEEP YOU FROM LEAVING THE SANDBOX. Stick to what you know - fantasy.

Another note to airheads everywhere. There is no shame in taking direction. Accept criticism, grow up and join the rest of us on the road to adulthood.

Barbara Walters is a Drip

Barbara Walters revealed an affair with a married United States Senator in the 1970s in her memoirs. On an interview tour to publicize the book she has stated many times that if the public became aware of the affair with Senator Edward Brooke, who is black,  their respective careers would have been ruined.

Here is the problem with her analysis. What she means is that if the great unwashed, racist, horde found out she had sex with a black man their careers would be ruined. I am sure that a percentage of whites would have been enraged and responded angrily. I am equally sure that a percentage of blacks would have been equally enraged and responded equally angrily. What percentage? That's anyone's guess, but let's say 50% for arguments sake.

What she fails to acknowledge is that a far greater percentage of said unwashed horde, white and black, would have been horrified that a "lady" would have sex with a married man. What percentage? I'd say, maybe 90%, but that's a guess.

Further, I think that a large number of people would be angry that a United States Senator would risk so much, putting national security, respect for the office, and jeopardizing the aspirations of subsequent black politicians. Pressed for a percentage and bearing in mind that we're talking about the early 1970s, I'm guessing a fairly high 60% in each of these categories.

The network she worked for might have had reason to feel aggrieved for being recklessly exposed to charges of professional misconduct. At the time they had credibility to consider.

Miss Walters says that she has never been good at marriage. I'm not surprised, considering the lack of respect she showed for the Senator's marriage. I am quite certain that she knows absolutely nothing on the topic. Releasing this detail of her life, in an attempt to show the world how "progressive" she has been for all these years, is proof that she knows nothing about wives either.

The new Mrs. Brooke might have been ok marrying a guy that slept with someone before she met the Senator. She may have a much different view of the character of a man that slept around on his first wife.

Some might see the elitism in blaming "the ignorant public" for racism, while ignoring completely the moral, ethical and potentially legal ramifications the public has every right to be indignant about.  My mom would have seen it and would not have kept quiet about it either. Words like tramp, whore and worse were certainly part of the lexicon at the time, but mom would have just called her a "drip".

Makes me wonder if the co-anchors she ravages in the book knew something we didn't.
